Balaam leur dit: « Passez la nuit ici. Demain je vous donnerai la réponse que le Seigneur m'aura communiquée. » D'après les v. 8-21, 26-40 et les chap. 23–24, Balaam est un sage, soumis au Seigneur qui lui révèle sa volonté et l'envoie bénir Israël (v. 20). Or, les v. 22-35 le montrent obtus, brutal, et décidé à suivre les envoyés de Balac, ce qui lui attire la colère de Dieu (v. 22). Balaam vit une contradiction profonde entre la promesse faite à Balac et ce qu'il découvre de la volonté de Dieu dans les différentes révélations. Ses réponses aux requêtes de Balac et de ses envoyés (v. 13, 18-19, 38) ne disent jamais le fond de la vérité, à savoir qu'il ne peut pas maudire Israël. En s'opposant à lui, Dieu vient lui rappeler qu'il part pour le servir lui, et non pour assouvir sa cupidité (comparer 2 Pi 2.15 Jude 11 Apoc 2.14). Le récit de l'ânesse contient une allusion comique: dans la science divinatoire de Mésopotamie, on interprétait les écarts d'animaux de trait comme des présages. Ici, le voyant ne voit rien, et c'est par un animal que Dieu lui ouvrira les yeux… La vérité ne peut être que révélée, aucune technique magique ou religieuse ne permet à l'homme d'y avoir accès, et encore moins d'imposer à Dieu une volonté humaine. Les chefs de Moab demeurèrent donc chez Balaam.
