Où donc te trouvais-tu quand je fondais la terre? Dieu invite Job à se mesurer aux divers aspects de la création. Il le place d'abord devant sa finitude temporelle: la terre et le ciel ont été fondés avant lui et sans lui. Puis, Job est placé devant ses limites spatiales: il n'a pu se rendre aux sources de la mer, ni explorer le fond de l'océan, ni franchir les portes du royaume de la mort, ni parvenir jusqu'aux dépôts de neige et de grêle. De nombreuses questions rhétoriques soulignent ironiquement l'ignorance et l'impuissance de Job. Appelé ainsi à découvrir sa propre fragilité au sein d'un vaste univers, Job est invité à reconnaître que son bilan sur l'ordre du monde n'est pas recevable (3.1-26).
