Crie à pleine voix, Au retour de l'exil, le peuple, qui a compris la leçon de l'histoire, se met à craindre Dieu, il veut le servir. Il pratique le jeûne comme un moyen de montrer à Dieu sa soumission. Mais au fil des ans, ces temps de jeûne et de lamentation sont devenus des habitudes dépourvues de signification, ils ne correspondent plus à rien dans la vie quotidienne de ceux qui les pratiquent. Le prophète ne condamne par la pratique du jeûne en elle-même, mais rappelle qu'elle implique de vivre de façon cohérente. Un jeûne authentique consiste à mettre en pratique les commandements de Dieu, tout spécialement en délivrant ceux qui souffrent. Un changement radical s'amorce dans ce texte: les rites du culte sont relativisés. Assurer des relations justes entre les humains passe au premier plan. Le vrai jeûne est ainsi récompensé: Dieu répond, Dieu guérit, il donne force et bonheur, la société se reconstruit. ne te retiens pas, dit le Seigneur. Comme le son du cor, que ta voix porte loin. Dénonce à mon peuple sa révolte, aux descendants de Jacob leurs fautes.
