Je bénirai ceux qui te béniront, mais je maudirai ceux qui te maudiront. A travers toi, je bénirai toutes les nations de la terre. » Les hommes de Babel voulaient se faire un nom. Mais c'est à Abram que Dieu donnera cette grandeur tant recherchée. Après l'histoire des origines de l'humanité, voici une nouvelle étape: par cet homme et sa descendance, Dieu choisit de se révéler au monde. Sur un ordre de Dieu, Abram abandonne sa patrie et son clan, geste inouï à une époque où l'individu n'existe que par l'appartenance à sa communauté. En quittant son territoire familial, Abram devient solidaire de toutes les nations, auxquelles il transmettra la bénédiction de Dieu accordée à sa descendance. Le judaïsme conservera un souvenir fort de la dimension religieuse de cette rupture (Judith 5.6-9). En acceptant la promesse d'une descendance alors qu'il a déjà soixante-quinze ans, Abram s'engage dans l'aventure de la foi (Hébr 11.1 8-12).
