En effet, Esdras s'appliquait de tout son cœur à étudier la loi du Seigneur, à la mettre en pratique et à enseigner aux Israélites les commandements et les règles de cette loi. Pendant plusieurs années après le retour des premiers exilés de Babylonie, d'autres groupes d'exilés ont continué de revenir au pays de Juda, terre de leurs ancêtres. L'un de ces groupes était dirigé par un prêtre du nom d'Esdras qui, sur l'ordre du roi Artaxerxès, quitta la Babylonie pour venir à Jérusalem. Homme de lettres et ardent défenseur de la foi, ce secrétaire des affaires juives à la cour de Perse est chargé par le roi perse de réorganiser le culte et la communauté juive selon la loi de Moïse. Le judaïsme a profondément évolué sous l'influence d'Esdras. Tout en restant centré sur le temple et les sacrifices, il accorde une place de plus en plus importante à l'observation de la Loi comme signe de la fidélité à Dieu (v. 10, 14). Cette évolution se poursuivra jusqu'à la fin du 1 siècle après J.-C.
