Je répondis: « Ah, Seigneur Dieu, on se plaint déjà de moi en disant: “Il ne parle que par énigmes.” » Comment comprendre que Dieu se prépare à tuer indifféremment les justes et les méchants? Cette rigueur est en contradiction avec le message de responsabilité que répète inlassablement le prophète: chacun rendra compte de sa propre conduite. Mais les catastrophes, les guerres ou les épidémies ne font jamais la distinction entre coupables et innocents! Peut-être ce passage reflète-t-il un constat pragmatique: durant les événements meurtriers qui menacent Jérusalem comme une épée tranchante, les justes ne seront pas épargnés et ils périront eux aussi en victimes innocentes. D'où les injonctions adressées au prophète: « courbe-toi sous le poids du désespoir » (v. 11) et « pousse des cris de détresse » (v. 17).
