2 Chronicles 8:2
French Jerusalem 1998
What Does This Mean?
This verse tells us that Solomon built the cities that Hiram had given back to him and then moved the Israelites to live there. It shows how Solomon took care of his people by providing them with new homes.
Explained for Children
Imagine you have a friend who gives you some old toys. You fix them up and then share them with your other friends so they can play too. That's kind of what Solomon did with these cities. He took some cities that weren't in good shape, fixed them up, and then let the people of Israel move in and make them their new homes.
Historical Background
The book of 2 Chronicles was likely written by priests or Levites after the Babylonian exile, around 536-300 BC. It was written to encourage the returned exiles by showing them God's faithfulness to the covenant and the importance of worship and obedience. The text reflects a time when Israel was rebuilding and reestablishing its identity after a period of exile.
Living It Out Today
In modern times, this verse can be seen as an encouragement for community leaders to provide homes and support for those in need. For example, a local mayor could work on renovating old buildings to create affordable housing, giving a new home to those who have been displaced or are in need.
