Mark 9:21
French (J.N. Darby) 1885
What Does This Mean?
In this verse from Mark's Gospel, Jesus is asking the father of a boy who has been suffering from an illness since childhood about how long it has been happening. The father replies that it started when the child was very young.
Explained for Children
Imagine you have a friend who has had a cold for as long as anyone can remember. One day, a doctor asks your friend’s dad how long he's had this cold. The dad says, 'Since he was just a little baby.' That’s kind of what Jesus is asking here about a boy with an illness that started when he was very young.
Historical Background
The Gospel of Mark was written around AD 65-70 by John Mark, who was likely a disciple of Peter. The audience for this text would have been early Christians, possibly including Gentiles, and the cultural context reflects first-century Jewish life under Roman rule.
Living It Out Today
In today's world, this verse reminds us to be attentive when dealing with long-term issues affecting others or ourselves. Just as Jesus sought detailed information about the boy’s illness, we should inquire deeply into any ongoing problems in our lives to find effective solutions.
