Luke 2:34
French (BDS) 2015 (La Bible du Semeur 2015)
What Does This Mean?
In this verse, Simeon is speaking to Mary about Jesus. He says that Jesus will cause some people in Israel to fall and others to rise again. Jesus will also be a sign that many will speak against.
Explained for Children
Imagine you have a new toy. Some kids will love it so much they'll play with it all the time, but other kids might not like it at all and say mean things about it. Simeon is saying something similar about Jesus: He will make some people very happy, others sad, and some won't understand Him.
Historical Background
This verse appears in Luke's Gospel, written around AD 80-100 to a Greek-speaking audience. It describes an event when the child Jesus was brought to the temple for purification rituals according to Jewish customs, highlighting Simeon’s prophetic words about Jesus' role.
Living It Out Today
Consider a modern scenario where a community leader proposes changes that benefit some members but alienate others. This verse reminds us that impactful actions often divide people; it's an invitation to consider our reactions and how we can support those who might struggle with change.
