Cette bête dispose d'un redoutable pouvoir pour faire la propagande du culte impérial: elle sait utiliser les images animées! Le chiffre de la première bête, le nombre 666, a suscité une multitude d'hypothèses, souvent extravagantes, à partir de la valeur numérique des lettres. L'identification la plus souvent proposée est Néron César, premier empereur persécuteur (en l'an 67). Pour Jean il s'agirait plutôt de Domitien (81-96). Le nombre 666 (sept moins un, répété trois fois) symbolise celui de l'imperfection qui tente d'imiter Dieu mais qui n'y parvient pas.
