Cette bête dispose d'un redoutable pouvoir pour faire la propagande du culte impérial: elle sait utiliser les images animées! Adepte d'un contrôle total de la population, elle impose sa marque comme condition pour avoir le droit d'exister. Le chiffre de la première bête, le nombre 666, a suscité une multitude d'hypothèses, souvent extravagantes, à partir de la valeur numérique des lettres. L'identification la plus souvent proposée est Néron César, premier empereur persécuteur (en l'an 67). Pour Jean il s'agirait plutôt de Domitien (81-96). Le nombre 666 (sept moins un, répété trois fois) symbolise celui de l'imperfection qui tente d'imiter Dieu mais qui n'y parvient pas.
