Les hommes forment des projets, mais c'est le Seigneur qui a le dernier mot. Dans le chap. 16, plusieurs sentences nomment le Seigneur. C'est au Seigneur que revient la décision finale (v. 1). Grâce à lui seul, les plans humains se réalisent (v. 9). C'est le Seigneur qui détermine l'avenir et non les dés que l'on jette (v. 33). Respecter le Seigneur permet de bien agir (v. 6). Voilà ce qui commande l'attitude du juste. Celui-ci préfère la pauvreté honnête à toute richesse frauduleuse (v. 8, 19). Il sait que le Seigneur aime les balances justes (v. 11), que la confiance dans le Seigneur procure le bonheur (v. 20) et qu'il accorde au juste la faveur de ses ennemis (v. 7).
