Un fils qui a de la sagesse tient compte des avertissements de son père, mais un fils insolent n'accepte aucun reproche. Un principe pédagogique ouvre également la série de sentences du chap. 13: le fils (ou le disciple) sage tient compte des avertissements de son père (ou de son maître). Derrière ce proverbe, se dessine une idée que l'on retrouve dans la sagesse égyptienne: nul ne naît sage, seule l'éducation donnée par un père peut faire accéder à la sagesse. Comme dans les chapitres précédents, divers thèmes se succèdent: la parole (v. 1 3), la paresse (v. 7), le mensonge (v. 5), la richesse et la pauvreté (v. 7-8, 20-21, 23), l'orgueil (v. 10), la vie que procure l'enseignement de la sagesse et la mort qu'il aide à prévenir (v. 14), le juste et le méchant (v. 15, 17), le sage et le sot (v. 16, 18-21). On remarquera que le thème de l'éducation est ici central (v. 14, 18) et comment, au v. 24, on recommande la méthode forte, recommandation qui sera reprise en 22.15; 23.13-14; 29.15 17. Selon 3.12, le Seigneur lui-même n'hésite pas à recourir à une telle méthode (Deut 8.5 Hébr 12.5-6 Apoc 3.19).
