Ceux-ci célébrèrent la fête le soir du quatorzième jour du premier mois, dans le désert du Sinaï; ils se conformèrent scrupuleusement aux indications que le Seigneur avait données à Moïse. Israël doit réserver au Seigneur un espace précis (le sanctuaire), ainsi que des temps fixés pour rappeler et célébrer ses actes de libération. Le premier de ces rendez-vous avec le Seigneur, la Pâque (Ex 12.1-13), à partir de la pleine lune du premier mois de l'année, au printemps, permet de revivre la sortie d'Égypte et la conclusion de l'alliance avec le Seigneur. Par cette célébration, l'Israélite confirme qu'il appartient au peuple de Dieu. Nul ne peut donc s'y soustraire, sous peine d'être exclu du peuple de Dieu. Une autre célébration, un mois après la date officielle, était réservée à ceux qui avaient été empêchés de prendre part à la fête, en raison soit d'une impureté rituelle soit d'un éloignement lors de la fête.
