« Communique à Aaron et à ses fils les paroles qu'ils devront prononcer pour bénir les Israélites. Ils diront: Cette formule de bénédiction est encore souvent utilisée dans les communautés juives et chrétiennes. Prononcer le nom de Dieu – il l'est ici trois fois – c'est appeler sa présence en personne auprès de chacun, présence aimante qui communique protection, bonheur et vie… tout ce que résume le don de la paix qui conclut cette formule de bénédiction. Le texte, sous forme brève, a été retrouvé en 1979 sur deux petits rouleaux d'argent, lors de fouilles à Jérusalem. Ce sont les plus anciens manuscrits d'un texte biblique connus à ce jour (fin du 7 siècle avant J.-C.). Identifiés comme amulettes, ils attestent la croyance au pouvoir efficace de la parole de bénédiction (ou de malédiction, 22.6). Mais les paroles transmises par les prêtres n'ont rien de magique: Dieu bénit librement et n'y est contraint par aucun rituel humain.
