Au moment de partir, il demande au fils de ce dernier, Hobab, d'être le guide d'Israël. D'après Jug 1.16 4.11, on peut supposer que Hobab s'est finalement laissé convaincre; en ce cas, il est remarquable que ce soit par un étranger que Dieu lui-même, dont le coffre sacré atteste la présence, conduise son peuple. La promesse de Moïse à Hobab renvoie à celle que Dieu a faite à Abraham (Gen 12.3). Comme la bénédiction en 6.22-27, les paroles de Moïse qui concluent la première partie du livre ont une forme poétique, et comme les sonneries des trompettes (10.9-10), elles invoquent la présence de Dieu quand Israël part à la bataille ou quand il se rassemble. Moïse aura bien des occasions de renouveler cette prière: « Dresse-toi, Seigneur… » (v. 35). Des ennemis vont barrer la route, Édomites, Amorites, Moabites. Pire encore, des adversaires, jusque dans la proche famille de Moïse, vont contrecarrer le projet de Dieu. D'où cette seconde prière: « Seigneur, reviens prendre place au milieu des familles innombrables d'Israël! » (v. 36).
