En urgence, de nuit, ce qui n'est pas légal. A la question du grand-prêtre, Jésus répond en revendiquant pour lui-même le titre de « Fils de l'homme, siégeant à la droite du Dieu puissant et… (venant) sur les nuages du ciel » (v. 64; Dan 7.13 Ps 110.1), se définissant ainsi égal à Dieu. Le Conseil supérieur le condamne à mort car il voit en cette affirmation un blasphème (Jean 10.33 Lév 24.16). Personne ne défend l'accusé. La cause est entendue, les mauvais traitements commencent.
