Quand on vous persécutera dans une ville, fuyez dans une autre. Je vous le déclare, c'est la vérité: vous n'aurez pas encore fini de parcourir toutes les villes d'Israël avant que vienne le Fils de l'homme. Tout comme Jésus, ses envoyés connaîtront l'opposition. Ces lignes peuvent évoquer les persécutions subies par les premiers disciples et racontées par les Actes des Apôtres. D'où la mention des synagogues, des rois et gouverneurs, de l'opposition au sein même de la famille. L'envoyé doit avoir le courage de tenir bon. Il reçoit la promesse d'une aide spéciale de l'Esprit Saint. Le titre « Fils de l'homme » souligne la mission de Jésus comme sauveur. En effet, à partir de la vision apocalyptique de Daniel 7.13 s, la figure d'un fils d'homme céleste, associé à la fin des temps, revient dans plusieurs écrits juifs. Paradoxalement, l'expression « Fils de l'homme » souligne donc que Jésus vient de Dieu. Avant même que les disciples ne finissent d'annoncer aux villes d'Israël la présence du Messie, Jésus se sera manifesté et aura été accueilli en tant que Fils de l'homme, dans sa dimension universelle.
