Les disciples partirent et allèrent à la ville; ils trouvèrent tout comme Jésus le leur avait dit, et ils préparèrent le repas de la Pâque. Jésus donne aux siens des instructions pour préparer le repas chez un maître de maison qu'il a choisi. Le repas de la Pâque juive réactualise la sortie d'Égypte, acte libérateur par excellence. On se rassemble par famille pour manger un agneau avec des pains sans levain. Jésus célèbre son dernier repas de la Pâque en lui apportant une dimension nouvelle: il sait que sa propre mort accomplira les Écritures et inaugurera une nouvelle alliance de Dieu avec l'humanité (v. 24). C'est pourquoi, lorsque, selon l'usage, il prend du pain et une coupe de vin pour les distribuer aux convives, il leur donne une signification nouvelle: les partager, c'est manifester la communion avec lui, être associé à sa mort et recevoir un signe du Royaume qui vient.
