Aussitôt, il put voir, et il suivait Jésus en louant Dieu. Toute la foule vit cela et se mit aussi à louer Dieu. Sur sa route, Jésus s'arrête encore à deux reprises: voici deux exemples d'hommes sauvés. Le premier est un aveugle, un exclu, un pauvre. Dans sa recherche, dans sa prière redoublée, puis dans la rencontre, il a su reconnaître en Jésus de Nazareth le Fils de David, c'est-à-dire le roi-Messie attendu par Israël, le Maître qui peut le guérir. Il a foi en Jésus: cette rencontre provoque une transformation totale. La foule se met, elle aussi, à louer Dieu. Zachée, au contraire, est un riche collecteur d'impôts, à la solde des Romains. A ce titre, il est tenu pour pécheur et, de ce fait, exclu du peuple de Dieu. Mais la rencontre avec Jésus produit en lui un total changement d'attitude envers les autres. Zachée a reconnu que Jésus est le Messie. Il devient l'exemple par excellence de l'homme libéré par la foi, qui accueille avec joie le salut que Jésus vient apporter à ceux qui le cherchent.
