Tous ceux qui en entendaient parler se mettaient à y réfléchir et se demandaient: « Que deviendra donc ce petit enfant? » La puissance du Seigneur était en effet réellement avec lui. La naissance de Jean-Baptiste bouscule les traditions en commençant par son nom, Jean, nouveau dans sa famille et qui signifie « Le Seigneur fait grâce ». Or, c'est le nom qui marque l'accomplissement complet de la prophétie de l'ange Gabriel. Non seulement le nom confère une identité à celui qui le porte, mais il permet la relation avec les autres et avec Dieu. Zacharie, qui avait perdu l'usage de la parole en exprimant ses doutes (1.18), la retrouve à ce moment précis en célébrant les louanges de Dieu. Son cantique se situe dans la droite ligne des psaumes. Il ne reste pas confiné dans la situation familiale mais s'ouvre à la destinée du peuple d'Israël que Dieu visite en lui accordant la délivrance. Au centre de la louange de Zacharie, se trouve la personne du Messie promis par Dieu et non pas, comme on aurait pu s'y attendre, son fils Jean. Zacharie s'adresse cependant à son fils pour annoncer sa mission: « prophète du Dieu très-haut » (v. 76). Dernier prophète de l'ancienne alliance, Jean annonce la nouvelle alliance. Il aura pour tâche de préparer les cœurs à recevoir le Sauveur, la lumière venue d'en haut.
