Alors Marie dit: « Je suis la servante du Seigneur; que tout se passe pour moi comme tu l'as dit. » Et l'ange la quitta. Après la femme âgée et stérile, c'est une jeune vierge qui va donner naissance à un fils: prodige divin dans les deux cas! Dieu accorde à Marie une grande faveur: elle mettra au monde Jésus, le Sauveur. L'enfant qu'elle va porter sera conçu du Saint-Esprit. D'abord troublée, Marie s'interroge pour enfin se soumettre dans l'humilité à la volonté de Dieu exprimée par l'ange Gabriel. Il faut dire que cette bonne nouvelle est en même temps difficile à assumer pour Marie. Joseph, son fiancé, pourrait très mal réagir devant cette grossesse. L'évangéliste Matthieu dit comment Dieu est intervenu auprès de lui (Matt 1.19-21). Mais quel est le cœur du message de l'ange? Jésus sera un descendant du roi David, le roi Messie qu'on attendait (2 Sam 7.12 13 16 És 9.6), et plus encore, la présence de Dieu lui-même (Ex 40.34), le « Fils de Dieu ».
