Puisque le peuple, comme le pays, est la propriété du Seigneur, un Israélite ne peut être réduit en esclavage et appartenir à un autre. Il est cependant permis aux Juifs d'avoir des esclaves étrangers. Le maître est propriétaire de ses esclaves et peut les transmettre en héritage, comme ses autres biens. Qu'advient-il à un Israélite qui se vend lui-même à un résident étranger (v. 47-55)? Il est un salarié, non un esclave (v. 53), puisqu'il appartient au Seigneur. Lui-même et ses enfants doivent retrouver leur liberté lors de l'année du Jubilé. Ces dispositions n'ont peut-être jamais été appliquées à la lettre. Elles traduisent cependant un souci de la dignité humaine, une attention particulière au droit de la personne et un refus de créer des situations d'oppression sans issue qui seraient source de violence. Ce code de lois sociales résume l'idéal de la première alliance.
