Le Seigneur dit à Moïse: La première partie de cette série de consignes pour les sacrifices (v. 3-16) précise qui a le droit de prendre part au repas sacré, tandis que la seconde (v. 17-30) indique quelles sont les victimes acceptables pour le sacrifice. L'exhortation finale rappelle aux croyants qu'ils doivent en tout temps honorer le Dieu qui veut les libérer. Dieu seul habilite une personne à accomplir son service (v. 9). Un prêtre ne peut donc vivre n'importe comment. Il doit respecter un ensemble de règles de comportement et d'hygiène qui le rendent apte à consommer les offrandes faites à Dieu. Ne pas respecter ces prescriptions serait faire insulte au Seigneur. Une telle faute rejaillirait sur tout le peuple (v. 16). L'interdiction du contact avec les cadavres (v. 4) entre en conflit avec le devoir d'offrir une sépulture aux morts. Cette problématique se retrouve dans une parabole de Jésus qui met en scène un Samaritain prenant soin d'un blessé, alors qu'un prêtre et un lévite font un détour pour ne pas toucher celui qu'ils prennent pour un cadavre (Luc 10.25-36).
