Avant la prise de Jérusalem, ses habitants pensaient la ville invincible, en partie à cause du temple. Le Seigneur ne laisserait jamais profaner ni détruire sa maison (Jér 7.1-15 26.1-19). Or, les fautes du peuple et de ses membres influents (2.14 Jér 23.11) étaient si graves qu'elles menaient tout droit au jugement de Dieu. Les prêtres et les prophètes sont devenus impurs comme des lépreux. Une règle de la loi de Moïse interdit d'entrer en contact avec ces derniers et même de toucher leurs vêtements. Ils sont rejetés et exclus (Lév 13.45-46).
