Lorsque les Israélites virent qu'il était mort, ils s'en retournèrent chacun chez soi. C'est la honte d'un guerrier que d'être abattu par une femme. On peut rapprocher la mort d'Abimélek de celle de Sisra (4.21). Car Abimélek, lui aussi, est tué par une femme qui détruit ses rêves de grandeur en l'atteignant à la tête avec une pierre. Nous avons ici une interprétation de l'histoire d'Abimélek déjà annoncée (9.24-25). Cette explication renvoie à une théologie de la rétribution où chacun est traité selon son comportement. Il ne s'agit pas ici de distinguer entre les bons et les méchants puisqu'il n'y a que des méchants! Ailleurs dans la Bible on trouve une réponse différente à cette question. Par exemple, dans la littérature de sagesse, le sage affirme: « Des justes sont traités comme le méritent les méchants, et des méchants connaissent la réussite que méritent les justes » (Eccl 8.14).
