Alors Josué congédia l'assemblée et chacun retourna dans la part de terre qui lui revenait. Le dernier geste de Josué consiste à ériger une pierre, peut-être inscrite, comme témoin durable des engagements pris, car cette pierre a entendu toutes les paroles du Seigneur. Dans le livre de Josué les pierres servent souvent de témoin: c'est le cas pour les douze pierres du Jourdain, déposées à Guilgal (4.20), pour les pierres sur lesquelles Josué grave une copie de la loi de Moïse (8.32), enfin pour l'autel construit par les tribus de l'est afin de servir de témoin (22.34). Josué a terminé son mandat. Il ne désigne pas de successeur. Chacun rentre chez soi. Il n'y a plus de chef en Israël. Une nouvelle période va commencer avec les Juges.
