Le prêtre Élazar, Josué, fils de Noun, et les chefs de famille des tribus israélites répartirent ces différents territoires par tirage au sort. Ils le firent à Silo, en présence du Seigneur, à l'entrée de la tente de la rencontre. Ils achevèrent ainsi le partage du pays. Ce verset rappelle le v. 1 du chap. 14 et montre que cette étape est terminée, avec le passage du sanctuaire de Guilgal à Silo. La tente de la rencontre est mentionnée pour la première fois dans le livre. Elle est le signe visible de la présence du Seigneur au milieu de son peuple en attendant la construction du temple de Jérusalem. Le partage du pays a donc lieu sous le regard de Dieu.
