Les descendants de Joseph, c'est-à-dire les tribus de Manassé et d'Éfraïm, partagèrent ce territoire entre eux. Dans le livre de Josué on ne parle jamais de la tribu de Joseph car elle est toujours divisée en deux: les tribus d'Éfraïm et Manassé, selon les noms des deux fils de Joseph (Gen 41.50-52).
