Cependant, quand il arriva en Galilée, les habitants de la région le reçurent bien, car ils étaient allés eux aussi à la fête de la Pâque à Jérusalem et avaient vu tout ce qu'il avait fait pendant cette fête. Comme les Galiléens, ce haut fonctionnaire attend de Jésus un miracle, à cause des signes extraordinaires qu'il a accomplis. Jésus n'est pas dupe d'un accueil qui paraît enthousiaste mais qui reste superficiel (2.23-25). Celui qui se contente d'une adhésion par intérêt et sans profondeur ne permet pas à la foi de grandir en lui et de parvenir à maturité. La réponse de Jésus au père de l'enfant peut paraître dure, mais elle est une forme d'épreuve; elle l'invite à croire sur sa seule parole, sans signe immédiat. L'opposition délibérée entre le danger imminent de la mort (v. 47, 49) et l'affirmation que l'enfant est vivant (v. 50, 51, 53) suggère que plus qu'une guérison, c'est une résurrection que Jésus a accordée à cet enfant.
