Voici un homme heureux: celui que Dieu corrige! Élifaz cherche maintenant à convaincre Job que la souffrance a une valeur éducative: il la considère comme un avantage. Cette idée n'est pas nouvelle (Amos 4.6-12 Deut 8.2-3). C'était toujours le peuple qui était éduqué par l'épreuve collective, jamais un individu. Sachant que le mal dont souffre Job est un mal-malheur et non un mal-châtiment (cf. le pari de l'accusateur aux chap. 1–2), cette interprétation de la souffrance ne ressemble-t-elle pas à l'opium de la résignation? Certains parviennent peut-être à discerner dans leur propre souffrance une valeur éducative (Hébr 12.5-11), mais de là à en faire une règle!
