Alors Job répondit au Seigneur: Job avoue, avec humilité, ne rien comprendre à l'action mystérieuse de Dieu. Il admet qu'il ne connaissait Dieu que par ouï-dire, mais maintenant, c'est de ses yeux qu'il a vu Dieu. Cette affirmation traduit une expérience bouleversante de la présence de Dieu. Plus rien ne sera comme avant. S'asseoir dans la poussière et la cendre (2.8) ou même en répandre sur sa tête (2.12) est un acte d'humilité devant Dieu (Gen 18.27). Job a conscience d'avoir porté contre Dieu des accusations non fondées. Devant la grandeur de sa création et devant la force de sa parole, il ne peut que demander pardon. Cependant la traduction de la finale du v. 6 est difficile et controversée. On peut comprendre aussi: « je rejette et j'abandonne la poussière et la cendre ». La poussière et la cendre font clairement référence à 2.8-12, passage où elles représentent la situation de Job, son attitude de plainte et de lamentation. Abandonner la poussière et la cendre, ce serait alors rejeter cette attitude. En effet, Job n'a pas à se repentir de son affirmation d'innocence, puisque Dieu lui-même n'a jamais repris les accusations des amis de Job.
