Voici ce qu'il dit: Tout le chap. 3 tourne autour d'une idée unique: Job voudrait être mort. Cette idée se développe de façon progressive: – v. 10: Job maudit le jour de sa naissance, – v. 11-19: il souhaiterait ne pas être né, – v. 20-26: il en appelle à Dieu pour être délivré. Job croit encore que Dieu fait justice aux opprimés. Il trouve donc sa situation insoutenable. Le problème n'est pas tant l'existence de Dieu que l'existence humaine ou, plutôt, l'influence de Dieu sur la vie des hommes. Or pour Job, cette influence est tragique, car il pense que Dieu est responsable de la souffrance (3.20-23). Face à la cruauté de son expérience, Job va jusqu'à remettre en question sa propre tradition religieuse.
