Ésaïe n'a jamais exercé d'activité dans le royaume du Nord (Israël), mais il fut témoin de l'invasion du royaume et de l'anéantissement de Samarie en 722. Ésaïe énumère les malheurs qui ont frappé le royaume du Nord pour montrer où conduisent l'entêtement et le refus de la parole de Dieu. L'orgueil du royaume du Nord est la cause de son aveuglement. Les luttes fratricides, tel un incendie qui couve, ont fini par tout embraser (v. 17-20). contre les descendants de Jacob, elle est tombée sur le royaume d'Israël.
