Qui de nous a cru la nouvelle que nous avons apprise? Qui de nous a reconnu que le Seigneur était intervenu? Le quatrième chant du serviteur révèle, de façon bouleversante, quelle sera la destinée de ce serviteur, en butte à l'hostilité des humains. Ayant commencé par mépriser son apparente insignifiance, ils l'avaient interprétée comme le signe d'un abandon par Dieu, voire d'une preuve de culpabilité. Parfaitement conscient des révoltes de son peuple, le serviteur choisit, par amour et solidarité, d'en supporter lui-même les conséquences, laissant à Dieu le jugement. Sans nier le mal qu'on lui fait subir, sans faire violence à quiconque, il accepte d'être méprisé, condamné, mis à mort. En le regardant, certains découvriront les conséquences du mal qu'ils font. En voyant comment Dieu approuve et redonne la vie à celui qui se laisse ainsi humilier, ils discerneront le projet de Dieu: faire reconnaître la grandeur cachée de celui que l'on charge de tous les maux et qui intercède pour les pécheurs. Le serviteur a été puni pour des crimes qui n'étaient pas les siens et a ainsi permis qu'un grand nombre de gens soient acquittés de leurs fautes. C'est pourquoi Dieu interviendra en rétablissant sa vie et son honneur. La souffrance du serviteur prend un caractère tout à fait particulier: il offre sa propre vie comme un sacrifice de réconciliation. La tradition chrétienne a vu dans le destin de ce serviteur une annonce des souffrances, de la mort et de la résurrection du Christ.
