Elle donna aussi le jour au frère de Caïn, Abel. Ève enfante un fils à qui elle donne le nom de Caïn, qui évoque l'acquisition, la possession: « J'ai fait un homme… » (v. 1). Le nom d'Abel signifie « fumée, vapeur », comme s'il comptait moins que son aîné. Mais être l'aîné ne donne pas tous les droits: Dieu se joue des logiques humaines et soutient les cadets comme Isaac, Jacob, David, etc. La colère de Caïn prouve qu'il pensait le contraire. Le choix de Dieu n'exclut toutefois pas Caïn, bénéficiaire d'une promesse de victoire possible sur le péché qui sépare des autres et de Dieu. Abel fut berger, et Caïn cultivateur.
