C'est alors que le Seigneur dit à Jacob: « Retourne au pays de tes ancêtres, auprès de ta famille. Je serai avec toi. » Jacob se sent entouré d'animosité. La fuite est le seul moyen de se libérer de la tutelle de son beau-père. De plus, il répond à la volonté de Dieu (v. 3, 16, 24, 29). Il met ses femmes au courant de la situation en leur donnant de son enrichissement, une version assez différente de celle du chapitre précédent. Elles abondent dans son sens: leur père les a traitées d'une manière indigne. Elles sont prêtes à le suivre. La foi en un Dieu unique ne s'est pas imposée d'emblée et sans compromission. Dans la famille de Rachel, ces idoles ont visiblement de l'importance. En les emportant subrepticement – Jacob n'est pas au courant –, Rachel semble penser qu'elles pourront lui être utiles.
