Les fils de Madian furent Éfa, Éfer, Hanok, Abida et Elda. Tous ceux-là furent descendants de Quetoura. La descendance d'Abraham ne comporte pas seulement le fils de la promesse, Isaac. Remarié, Abraham engendre encore six fils. Quant à Ismaël, il devient père de douze fils, comme bientôt Jacob. Deux lignées sont ainsi rapprochées. Malgré ce que semble indiquer le v. 19, l'histoire qui suit est celle de Jacob: celle d'Abraham s'achève à peine que déjà la naissance de ses petits-fils, Ésaü et Jacob, est annoncée. Quelle fut donc l'histoire d'Isaac, le second des trois patriarches? Des récits le concernant ont été mêlés à ceux d'Abraham, son père: la naissance et l'enfance (21.1-21), le sacrifice arrêté à temps (22.1-19), le mariage (chap. 24); d'autres seront mêlés à ceux de ses fils. Autre étonnement: des événements de la vie d'Isaac ressemblent, jusque dans des détails, à certains événements de la vie d'Abraham (comparer chap. 26 et 20), même dans la mort (35.28-29 et 25.7-9). L'ensemble se présente comme une suite de récits provenant sans doute de traditions diverses, ce qui expliquerait certaines divergences ou redites. Saga familiale? Roman d'aventures? Au cours de péripéties qui nous étonnent souvent, Jacob découvre que Dieu l'accompagne.
