C'est par peur que Loth a isolé sa famille, contraignant ses filles à un tel expédient pour avoir des enfants, et donc garder ouverte la porte de l'avenir. Ce n'est pas la première fois que Loth privilégie la sécurité (13.10-11), à l'opposé d'Abraham qui n'hésite pas à résider parmi les étrangers dans le pays que Dieu a promis. Loth et ses descendants, bien qu'apparentés à Abraham, ne seront pas associés à la promesse.
