Alors les magiciens dirent au Pharaon: « C'est la puissance de Dieu qui est à l'œuvre! » Pourtant, comme le Seigneur l'avait annoncé, le Pharaon, obstiné, ne tint pas compte de la requête de Moïse et d'Aaron. Comme dans le troisième fléau de chaque série, le Seigneur transmet son ordre à Moïse et à Aaron sans prévenir le Pharaon. Jusqu'ici, les magiciens s'étaient imposés comme les rivaux des serviteurs de Dieu et avaient réussi à produire les mêmes signes. Ne parvenant plus à suivre Moïse et Aaron dans leurs prodiges, ils s'avouent vaincus et reconnaissent qu'ils ne peuvent rien contre Dieu. Ce fléau marque ainsi le point culminant de cette première série. Mais le Pharaon ne suit pas les magiciens dans leur conversion et s'obstine dans son refus.
