Ce jour sera à jamais un signe de la relation qui unit les Israélites à moi-même; en effet j'ai créé le ciel et la terre en six jours, mais le septième jour je me suis interrompu pour me reposer. » Une nouvelle invitation au respect du sabbat, plus solennelle encore, montre que même la construction du sanctuaire est soumise à cette législation. Le repos du septième jour constitue un signe distinctif de l'alliance entre Dieu et son peuple. Dieu créateur lui-même sanctifie Israël. Aussi la profanation de ce jour sacré attire-t-elle la mort sur le coupable. Le ramassage de la manne (16.22-26) et le commandement du repos (20.8-11) annonçaient la législation du sabbat. Un signe marque chacune des alliances de Dieu: l'arc-en-ciel pour l'alliance universelle entre Dieu et Noé (Gen 9.12-13), la circoncision pour l'alliance avec Abraham (Gen 17.11). Le sabbat est le signe de l'alliance du Sinaï.
