Moïse alla rapporter aux Israélites tout ce que le Seigneur lui avait dit et ordonné. Ils répondirent d'une seule voix: « Nous obéirons à tous les ordres du Seigneur. » La conclusion de l'alliance s'accomplit à trois niveaux: le peuple demeure dans le camp; les anciens gravissent la montagne, mais n'approchent pas du Seigneur; seul Moïse vient près de Dieu. Une partie du sang est répandu sur l'autel, qui représente Dieu, l'autre partie sur le peuple, qui participe ainsi à la vie divine. Ce rite du sang marque la ratification la plus solennelle de l'alliance, qui devient une réalité entre le Seigneur et Israël. Moïse et les représentants du peuple gravissent la montagne pour célébrer leur communion avec le Seigneur. Ils ne voient Dieu que d'en bas, sous ses pieds (v. 10), comme à travers une voûte bleue. Les humains ne peuvent voir Dieu à moins d'être ravis par la mort hors du monde profane. Mais pour cette occasion unique, le Seigneur a invité les anciens, qu'il protège en raison des lois de l'hospitalité.
