N'ayez pas peur d'eux, car le Seigneur votre Dieu combattra pour vous. » Josué a déjà été désigné par Dieu (1.38) pour diriger la conquête du pays promis. Moïse le lui rappelle et l'invite à la confiance car Dieu combat pour son peuple (v. 22). Pourquoi Moïse, le serviteur de Dieu par excellence, n'a-t-il pas pu entrer dans le pays promis? Cette question a dû habiter les croyants du peuple d'Israël durant longtemps. On explique cette situation par une faute mystérieuse que Moïse aurait commise: si grand qu'il ait été, il demeure un homme avec ses faiblesses (Nomb 27.12-14 Deut 32.48-52). Comme autrefois Abraham et les autres ancêtres, il a pu voir de loin le pays promis sans s'y établir. Le v. 29 marque une transition entre le rappel des événements du passé et l'exhortation qui va suivre.
