Le Seigneur le livrera au malheur en l'excluant tout à fait du peuple d'Israël, conformément aux malédictions que comporte l'alliance décrite dans le présent livre de la loi. L'engagement exigé d'Israël est résumé par l'essentiel: rester fidèle à Dieu en se gardant des idoles. Tout au long de l'histoire, la menace la plus grave contre l'alliance a été la tentation de remplacer Dieu, soit par une divinité étrangère (v. 17), soit par l'être humain lui-même qui déciderait de se passer de Dieu (v. 18). Ce passage suppose que l'alliance est effectivement rompue et que Dieu a mis ses menaces à exécution. L'auteur fait parler les spectateurs, témoins de la catastrophe, pour en expliquer la cause: l'infidélité du peuple (Jér 5.18-19 13.22-25 16.10-13).
