Pour vous, conduisez-vous de manière irréprochable à l'égard du Seigneur votre Dieu. La tradition du Deutéronome met le prophète au-dessus de tous. Choisi directement par Dieu (v. 15), il n'entre dans aucun cadre législatif précis. Sa fonction n'est pas une institution mais un don fait par Dieu à son peuple en vue d'établir une communication directe et privilégiée (v. 17-18). Moïse est le modèle par excellence du prophète. En 34.10, on constatera que la promesse d'un autre prophète semblable à lui ne s'est pas encore réalisée. Le rédacteur dénonce certaines pratiques magiques, qui visent à entrer en communication avec Dieu (v. 9-14; 2 Rois 17.17). Il envisage aussi le cas du faux prophète (v. 20-22). Plus que des critères qui permettraient de discerner immédiatement entre vrais et faux prophètes, le rédacteur propose l'épreuve du temps; l'histoire montrera quelle parole a un effet durable, alors, on reconnaîtra le vrai prophète (v. 21; Jér 14.13-16 23.9-40 28.1-17).
