Je présentai au Seigneur mon Dieu cette prière de confession des péchés: L'auteur s'interroge sur l'épreuve qu'a représentée l'exil à Babylone, pour essayer d'en tirer des enseignements pour les difficultés présentes. En examinant les textes anciens (Jér 25.12-14), il comprend que les malheurs des descendants d'Israël ont pour cause leur infidélité envers Dieu. Il reconnaît alors devant Dieu les fautes de son peuple et il supplie Dieu d'intervenir. Le jeûne, le vêtement de deuil et la cendre sur la tête expriment le sérieux de sa démarche (v. 3).
