On entre vraiment en territoire romain! Cependant, la Bonne Nouvelle pénètre en ce lieu par l'intermédiaire des femmes; le Seigneur ouvre le cœur de Lydie qui ouvre sa maison. Les vociférations de la servante au sujet de Paul et de ses compagnons sont exactes (v. 17). D'où l'irritation de Paul, qui doit démasquer l'esprit qui la fait ainsi crier. Le nom de Jésus convertit le pouvoir de prédiction en un véritable accueil de la parole qui sauve. Les maîtres de la servante considèrent la situation sous le seul angle de leur profit personnel: il leur faut donc un prétexte pour se débarrasser de cette apparente intrusion juive. Ils se posent alors en défenseurs du caractère romain de leur ville. Mais les magistrats ne respectent pas leur propre loi puisqu'ils font battre et enfermer des citoyens romains.
