Parce qu'il n'a pas tenu son serment de vassalité envers Babylone (Ézék 17.19), Sédécias est assiégé dans sa capitale par l'armée de Nabucodonosor. Le siège dura longtemps, sans doute de janvier 588 à juillet 587, provoquant une terrible famine. Le roi tenta de s'enfuir, mais il fut rattrapé près de Jéricho et conduit auprès du roi de Babylone à Ribla sur l'Oronte en Syrie. Une scène atroce s'y déroulera pour Sédécias et ses fils.
