On l'enterra dans les tombes royales de la Cité de David, car il avait toujours agi pour le bien d'Israël, et pour l'honneur de Dieu et de son temple. Le prêtre Yoyada, conseiller et protecteur du roi, meurt. Commence alors pour Joas le temps de l'égarement et de l'infidélité. Il se met à l'écoute de mauvais conseillers et il s'écarte des voies du Seigneur. Sourd aux appels qui auraient pu le faire revenir sur une meilleure voie, Joas s'entête et commandite le meurtre de Zacharie, fils de Yoyada (il est fait allusion à ce meurtre en Matt 23.35 et Luc 11.51). La colère de Dieu frappe le roi. Les événements qui suivent résultent du jugement de Dieu posé sur l'infidélité de Joas. La prière de Zacharie est exaucée. Ce passage oppose Yoyada le fidèle et Joas l'infidèle. L'un est mort très âgé (v. 15), ce qui est un signe de la bénédiction divine. Il aura sa sépulture parmi les tombes royales de Jérusalem, ce qui est un honneur. L'autre meurt honteusement, relativement jeune et ne sera pas enterré dans les tombes royales (v. 24-25). Le statut du roi ne le met pas à l'abri du jugement de Dieu.
