Avec tous ceux qui se rassemblèrent auprès de lui, il se rendit au lieu sacré de Gabaon; là, en effet, se dressait la tente de la rencontre avec Dieu, que Moïse, le serviteur du Seigneur, avait fabriquée dans le désert. Après une rapide mention de l'autorité royale de Salomon, qui rappelle 1 Rois 2.12, le livre s'intéresse tout de suite à l'activité cultuelle du roi: d'abord à Gabaon où se trouvent la tente de la rencontre, fabriquée par Moïse, et un autel pour les sacrifices, mais surtout à Jérusalem où se tient le coffre sacré apporté par David. Toutefois c'est à Gabaon que Dieu se manifeste à Salomon, signe d'une relation privilégiée entre le jeune roi et son Dieu. La comparaison des v. 7-12 avec 1 Rois 3.5-14 révèle des variantes entre les deux récits. Tout ce qui pourrait diminuer ici le prestige du roi, par exemple son inexpérience, disparaît. Le message est clair: la royauté de Salomon est légitime et voulue par Dieu.
