Pour la troisième année le pays souffre de la sécheresse promulguée par Élie (17.1). La compétition est ouverte entre le Baal qui détient le feu du ciel préalable à la pluie, et le véritable Seigneur. Ce dernier remporte le défi en allumant le bûcher. La narration n'hésite pas à frapper les esprits: elle montre un Élie décidant de faire périr les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal. En effet, Élie veut que l'existence et la puissance du seul Seigneur soient définitivement reconnues.
